Kuranda Village

A vibrant village and a close knit community give Kuranda its unique flavour. The rainforest encircles the village which is an attraction in itself, and the journey there is an exciting one.

Other than the scenic highway route, you can choose to travel to Kuranda via two of the region's icons; the Kuranda Scenic Railway or Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. A popular option is to combine both!

Barron Gorge

One of Kuranda's most treasured landmarks is the Barron River and its spectacular gorge; home of the mighty Barron Falls. The river also has great significance to the Djabuganydji, the local Aboriginal people. Visitors can now follow a network of trails and walks around the Barron Gorge National Park, many originally created by the Djabuganydji as they moved seasonally between the uplands and the coast.

A river boat wildlife spotting cruise operates from beside the train and Skyrail arrival stations, with five daily departures.

Wildlife watching is one of the great things to do in Kuranda, and the village has outstanding wildlife attractions and parks, including Butterfly, Bird and Koala Parks. Visitors can sample exotic fruits from the tropical orchard, take a tour on an amphibious Army Duck, enjoy Aboriginal culture and observe Australia's unique fauna.

Shopping in Kuranda

Over the years, Kuranda has evolved into a great place to shop. There are bargains to be had here, as well as exquisite artisan pieces at the other end of the spectrum.

The markets in Kuranda are very diverse and have been a feature of the village for 25 years. From simple stalls to fully stocked shops, there are many places to browse on both sides of the wide, tree-lined streets. Galleries feature an extensive range of ceramics, textiles, glass, wood, metal, paintings and sculptures. Best buys are quality Australiana products such as opals, wood-art, didgeridoos and other authentic Aboriginal artifacts.

Dining in Kuranda

From a great espresso coffee and tea-cake to an a-la-carte lunch with fine Aussie wines, a whole range of dining options awaits you in Kuranda. Pubs here provide great meals and a cold beer, and most restaurants and cafes have both indoor and outdoor seating to cater for everyones tastes. Choices here are unlimited.
